Proceeds will benefit the Mount Mitchell Runners Club, promoting healthy living and exercise.

Special Event

The Fire on the Mountain Blacksmith Festival in beautiful downtown Spruce Pine will be held the same day beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Locust Street (“Lower Street”) in Spruce Pine. Bring the family...spend the day!

Course Descriptions

5K Course Description

The 5k begins at 5:30 PM near First Baptist Church on Summit Avenue. Going west on Summit to Greenwood Road to Stroup Road. Turn right on C. Pittman Road (along the river) to turn around. Return to Summit Avenue past church to Riverside Drive, then left onto paved path along river to finish at Riverside shelter. Walk will follow the same route and begin at the same time.

T Shirts/Door Prizes

All pre-registered runners and walkers will receive a t-shirt. Same-day registrants are NOT guaranteed a t-shirt.

Door prizes, including handmade items donated by local artists and gifts given by downtown merchants will be awarded at the end of the race.

Awards & Presentations

Awards will be presented as soon as results are calculated. Presentations will take place at the Riverside Park. Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners and top male and female masters. Awards will be presented to the first, second, and third place male and female in each age division.

First Aid/General

Medical personnel will be available. Restrooms will be available. Water stations will be provided along both the run and walk courses.

Fees (non-refundable)

  • 5k Run/Walk:
    $20 per person postmarked on/before April 21, 2009
    ($25 on race day).

  • 1 Mile/100 Yard:
    $12 per person postmarked on/before April 21, 2009
    ($15 on race day).

FROM ASHEVILLE, NC:

Get a map to Spruce Pine here.
To get to Spruce Pine, take U.S.19 north and follow U.S. 19-E when it begins in Yancey County. Turn left at the second red light on the Spruce Pine bypass (U.S. 19-E) onto Greenwood Road. Follow Greenwood Road to a red light and go straight to First Baptist.

FROM JOHNSON CITY, TN:

To get to Spruce Pine, take TN 173 north from Unicoi until it turns into NC 226. Stay on NC 226 through Bakersville until it connects with the Spruce Pine bypass. At the light, turn left onto the Spruce Pine bypass (U.S. 19-E), then make a left at the next red light onto Greenwood Road. Follow Greenwood Road to a red light and go straight to First Baptist.

FROM CHARLOTTE/MORGANTON/HICKORY, NC:

Get a map to Spruce Pine here.
Take Interstate 40 west to Exit 86 (NC 226). Follow NC 226 north through Marion and on to the Woodlawn Community. Take the NC 226 turn-off to the left (at the red light) and follow NC 226 to Spruce Pine. When the road connects with the Spruce Pine bypass (at a red light), go through the red light, down the hill to a red light, turn right onto Summit Avenue, then take a left at Tappan Street (First Baptist Church is on your left, just off Summit).

FROM BOONE, NC:

Get a map to Spruce Pine here.
Take NC 105 south to US 221 at Linville. Turn right onto US 221 and follow US 221 south to its intersection with NC 194. Turn right onto NC 194 and follow it to its connection with US 19-E. Turn left onto US 19-E south and follow it to Spruce Pine. Go to the second stop light on the 4-lane Spruce Pine bypass. Turn right at the red light, go down the hill to a red light, turn right onto Summit Avenue, then take a left at Tappan Street (First Baptist Church is on your left, just off Summit).
